Rommel, like most German soldiers at the time, believed it was his duty to defend Germany, and obey the orders he was given. It was not his place to question the actions of those in command over him.
Rommel did not join the Nazi party, nor was he ever politcally active.
He was known to the allied soldier who fought against him as a cunning and resourceful, but he was always chivalrous and humane to the prisoners that he took.
He refused all orders to kill any Jewish priosners that he took, and like most Germans was probably unaware of the existence or true purpose of the the Nazi death camps for most of the war. Only toward the end of the war did the truth about these places become widley known in Germany.
In 1944 he was aware of, but took no part in a plot to kill Adolph Hitler.
