Many people consider Paul Revere to have been a great man. Revere was a hero of the American Revolution. He is probably most well-known for having alerted the Colonial militia that British forces were approaching.
Some of both. He was an American patriot who was a member of a secret group of tradesmen known as the "Mechanics". They were a sort of underground resistance group in Boston, who routinely monitored the movements of the British troops and gathered intelligence regarding British plans. Revere acted as a courier before and after his famous "midnight ride"; one of his earlier missions may have been just as important as his ride to Lexington.
An analogy can be drawn to John Alden and Priscilla Mullins, who were immortalized in Longfellow's "The Courtship of Miles Standish". While they were real historical figures, their fame was greatly magnified by Longfellow's poems, to the exclusion of some of their equally-deserving contemporaries. There is also the problem that Longfellow's poems are perceived by many people as historically accurate, which they are not.
It really depends on your definition of hero, but typically is considered a hero because he warned the minute-men that the British were coming to seize our arsenal at Concord.
