It was the first successful settlement in North America. It was settled in 1607 when the London company sent 107 men to look for gold in VA. They were a combination of military, gentlemen, and rogues. They built a fort in an Native American empire of 14,000 and built in the worse land in the entire area. Within six months only 34 of the 107 were still alive. Disease and starvation were the main reasons.

No. That honor goes to St. Augustine, Florida. If you want the first permanent BRITISH settlement, that's Jamestown. The oldest British settlement still around today is Plymouth.
