Hannibal had taken the war to Italy, and prospered for 15 years by detaching some of Rome's disgruntled allies to his side, and threatening Rome itself, but unable to attack it throug lack of a seige train.

Eventually the Romans woke up and invaded North Africa and treatened Carthage, using the North African kingdoms as allies.

Hannibal was recalled to Carthage to meet the threat, and without alles was unable to match the Roman force when pinned down in direct battle. as defeated at Zama 202 BCE.
