They were fighting against Nazi control of the European mainland as well as against Japanese influence within the Pacific theatres of war .
The capture of the airfields that the Japanese had built upon the island were important to the Allies because it would have prevented interdiction of the Japanese air-forces on Allied supply lines/shipping and the airfields , in Allied hands , were of strategic importance to the Allied strategy of 'Island Hopping' although USMC General H.M."Howlin Mad" Smith felt it was an island of limited importance and could be bypassed leaving the Japanese there stranded on the island and essentially out of the war .
Japan was being defeated at sea, in the air, and on the ground in virtually all theaters of combat. Despite yhese obvious defeats and the impending invasion of Japan itself, the Japanese Army resisted all discussions of ending the war (on any likely terms). The United States was aware of this, and wanted to avoid a final bloody invasion of Japan. The US President agreed with the key allied military & diplomatic leaders, and decided to jolt or shock the Japanese government or Japanese Emperor into deciding on the surrender, with the use of the atomic bombs against the Japanese cities. This strategy worked. The Japanese Emperor had to force the Japanese military leaders to accept the terms of surrender.

The Japanese successfully invaded the Philippines. Three years later the Allied Forces arrived and defeated the Japanese in the Philippines.
