While the Spanish American war is sometimes called a splendid little war, there were noteworthy defects that needed to be worked out before the US Military would be in a position to fight on a modern Battlefield. Noteworthy examples include:

Black-powder had to go.

Horses were out and trucks were essential.

A squad level automatic weapon was needed.

The cumbersome and heavy Gatling gun was out and the light machine gun was in.

Handguns needed more stopping power.

Artillery needed upgrading.

Communications was nonexistent.

Naval gunfire was to small and very inaccurate.

The Navy needed to own at least some troop transport capacity.

Military medicine needed a complete overhaul with an emphasis on controlling things like malaria and Yellow Fever.
