The portuguese seafaring explorations were very sucessfull. We discovered land and riches, developed, stole riches and explored the natives (regretably) sending them off as slaves. Sadly standard business at the time. Then the Dutch and the English got jealous and began pirating us and we began to lose interest. We tried to unite Angola and Mozambique and England threatened us and we lost further interest. Then these countries demanded their independence, we fought those we could and gave up when the fascist government toppled. Not a moment too soon.
