they thought that if they gave him land he wouldn't want more. they thought it would avoid war.
Chamberlain met with Hitler on three different occasions. Once at Berchtesgaden, another time at Bad Godesburg and a third time at Munich.
Czechoslovakia, (which was one nation then), was given to Hitler, without asking the Czechs what they thought of the deal. Afterwards, England's Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain waved a piece a paper around and proclaimed: "Now, we have peace in our time". A year later, Germany invaded Poland, England declared war on Germany, and Winston Churchill replaced Neville Chamberlain as Prime Minister.

Chamberlain was relieved, he thought he prevented the war from reaching them. He was wrong though, his appeasement tactic only convince Hitler that the German army would not meet serious resistance.

Winston Churchill opposed Neville Chamberlain's policy of appeasement because he saw and new what Hitler was doing and new that he was getting stronger, he stood up and said this but was the only one who did so...He didint say appeasement was a bad idea he just thought after Hitler had broken his promises a couple of times he thought that they should have stopped and used aggression and stopped Hitler while they could.

Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain is most known for his policy of "appeasement" toward Adolf Hitler's Germany. It is thought that his appeasement policy was for Britain to be seen as being fair to German concerns and to keep Europe from going into war. It is also thought that Chamberlain thought war was inevitable and used the policy to gain time in order to build up Britain's military position.Chamberlain also declared war on Germany in 1939 after Germany attacked Poland. Britain and France had previously agreed to protect Poland.Chamberlain was also known for his efforts towards improving the lives of workers. He supported the Holiday Pay Act which gave workers one week off with pay and the Factories Act of 1937 which limited the number of hours women and children worked.
Peace in our time. That was the idea and I am sure he thought it a laudable one, by appealing to Hitlers' egalatrian feelings he thought a deal could be struck. The problem was Hitlers egalatarian feelings did not exist. Hitler, as time showed, was not a man to whom you could appeal in any way. Chamberlain did not know this: & frankly neither did anyone else at that time. In hindsight critiscism is so very easy, but the road to hell, as the saying goes, is paved with good intentions.
