There have been a total of 251 wars and armed conflicts since 1945. This number does not include smaller, more localized conflicts that may have taken place during that time. The majority of these wars were fought in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

From 1945-2001 there were 194 conflicts or wars. War is very broad term, it can include great power wars, civil wars, genocides, terrorism, humanitarian intervention, inter-ethnic wars and could even include the Mexican Drug War.

Carl von Clausewitz defined war "War is thus an act of force to compel our enemy to do our will."

Since 1945 there have been only two wars fought by the Superpowers: Korean War & Vietnam War. During the cold war 1945-1990; there were dozens of local wars NOT involving the superpowers: The Communist Chinese Revolution that created Red China & Taiwan in 1949 (the 1917 Russian Revolution created the Soviet Union), the French Indo-China War (1st Indochina War) was inspired by communism, but did not directly involve the superpowers (US/Soviets/Red China), Arab-Israeli Wars, Pakistan-Indian War, Uprising in the Belgium Congo, the end White rule in South Africa (Apartheid) to include Rhodesia, Insurrections in Santo Domingo, Communist inspired insurrections in Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

The end of the Vietnam War in 1975 and the end of the Cold War in 1990; brought the rise of "Military Operations."

1. Operation Urgent Fury-Invasion of Grenada (1989)

2. Operation Just Cause-Panama (1989)

3. Operation Desert Shield (Build up of military forces in 1990); Operation Desert Storm-opening of hostilities in Iraq (1991)

4. Operation Restore Hope-Somalia (1993)

5. Bosnia Operations mid-1990's

6. Operation Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan (2001-ongoing)

7. Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003-ongoing)

News worthy ones:

Korea, Vietnam, Middle East (Southwest Asia).

After Vietnam, the Middle East, and the end of the cold war: Only military campaigns occurred (Operations). The Middle East wars all occurred DURING the Vietnam War (at the same time as the Viet War).
