The world will not end. The Church prays, "world without end". Our current heavens and earth shall pass away with a loud bang, also the works in it, but Christ shall shorten the days of destruction as the new heavens and earth are ushered in instead of the old.
No one in the history of the Universe knows the end of the world but God. This is only my opinion as not everyone has a faith. No one can truly judge whether 2012 will be the end of time but what should be recognised is that it could happen anytime at all. The Mayans can make predictions but they wouldn't be correct because as mentioned, only God knows :)
