... or simply an Independence movement?

A revolution is usually taken to mean a complete change in the system of government; from a monarchy to a republic, as in the French example, or from one sort of monarchy (absolute) to another (constitutional) as in England. By this criterion, it was a revolution. George III was King of the American colonies, and they kicked him out and set up a republic.

Probably, on balance and in hindsight, a mistake, but there you go, they will do these things.

There is almost no debate that the French Revolution was a revolution. It trew off the yoke of a long-established monarchical process and replaced it with a fledgling republic. Furthermore, it rebuked the historic French idea of inequalities between clergy, nobles, and the remainder of society, asserting equality of all men before the law.

There is a lot of debate as to whether the American Revolution is properly considered a Revolution or an Independence War. Certainly, the controlling government in the United States changed from being a colony under foreign authority to domestic rulership, but most of the organization and development of the individual states was not seriously altered by this new independence. Those who argue that it is a revolution demonstrate how the US Constitution differs rather strongly from the British Laws in operation at the time, creating an executive who is elected rather than hereditary and using French Enlightenment ideas about the balance of powers as opposed to creating a singularly strong legislature like the British Parliament (that dwarfed the powers of both the King and the Courts). Those who argue that it is not a revolution point to the fact that most of the state and local governments remained intact, laws did not overwhelmingly change, there were minimal attacks on loyalists after the Revolution, and there was no social reorganization.
