Washington, D.C. is the capital of the U.S., but New York City was once the capital, briefly, on and off during the late 18th century.

It was, at one time, but to make the southern states feel apart of the new United States, it was moved from NY further south to Virginia/Maryland on the Potomac River to create"Washington D.C." On July 16, 1790 DC became the nation's new and permanent capital

New York was the first capital of the United States following ratification of the United States Constitution. It was moved to Philidephia in 1791 and in 1801 our current capital of Washington, DC became the permanent home of the government of the United States. MrV
