However one of the biggest causes of today's Middle East problems happened shortly after WW1 when the British government reneged on a deal Laurence of Arabia had negotiated with the Arabs over the status of what was then called the Palestinian Territories following the war for Arab support on the side of the Allies. Instead the British government chose instead to support Zionist claims in the Palestinian Territories, which the Arabs saw as a betrayal.

This happened before Jimmy Carter was born!
