They were usually "patch jobs" and they did the best they could. They didn't have helicopters to come and air-lift them out. It was by the grace of God many survived from their wounds. In some cases there were hospitals near the fighting lines, but generally not enough doctors or nurses.

Many people died in no mans land due to no one being able to help them and more concerned about saving themselves. Yet, there were the few soldiers that managed to drag back wounded soldiers back in the trenches to receive treatment. When a soldier was too injured to continue, he relied on corageous soldiers to bring them back from over the top.

US wounded received the best treatment of any forces durning WW2. Better treatment during the Korean War, with the "experimental" use of the helicopter (whirley birds). And the best treatment during the Vietnam War, when the helicopter was able to transport wounded men quickly to medical aid stations. Early evacuations from the battlefield to an aid station was the key to survival for wounded men.

Cons: Having to watch people die, having to kill others and having the fear of being killed. Some soldiers were permanently emotionally and mentally damaged, some physically (of course). If they were mentally damaged, they could have got shell shock. Being away from family. Having to live in atrocious conditions, especially in the trenches. Diseases, mud, damp, no shelter, awful weather, living around dead bodies, living with men that haven't washed in weeks.

Pros:

Fighting for your country. A sense of pride, achievement and accomplishment. Being able to at least write letters to your family. Learning to take nothing for granted. Getting a daily ration of rum to calm your nerves! Making new friends.
