The USS TANG (SS-306) is currently honored at a featured memorial at the National WWII Memorial in New Orleans.

If you are referring to the USS Merrimack II, she was a typical 40-gun frigate and would run a crew of about 350 men. If you are talking about the USS Virginia, the Confederate iron-clad that was built on the remains of the hull of the USS Merrimack II, she had a compliment of 320 men.

The USS Tang was on it's fifth war patrol in the China Sea. When it came upon a convoy of merchant ships the last was fired and it circled. USS Tang was hit just after the coning tower near the engine rooms. It sunk is shallow water.
The USS TANG is located off the mainland coast of China near Oksu and Turnabout Islands. She lies in 180 feet of water, but has never "officially" been found. I imagine local fishermen know her whereabouts as most fishermen tend to run afoul of wrecks with their nets.
