On September 1, 1730, he declared [established] a Common Law Marriage and had three children together, two sons, William and Francis (Francis died at age 4), and a daughter, Sarah, born in 1743. It was Sarah who later cared for her father in his old age.

So, legally he was declared married on September 1, 1730 as a common law marriage.

Benjamin Franklin was 17 when he married his wife who was 15. They got married young in the 1700's. It was common.
