General Ambrose Burnside captured Roanoke Island in early February of 1862. He commanded about 10,000 troops and was greatly assisted by US Navy Flag Officer Goldsborough. It was a joint army and navy expedition.
Sir Walter Raleigh started the colony on Roanoke Island but the colonists disappeared.

Led by General Ambrose Burnside, Union forces captured Roanoke Island. This was in North Carolina and covered February 7th to the 8th of February 1862. This was a joint army navy operation. Confederate forces were under the command of Henry Wise.
The 1862 joint US army and navy expedition to capture Roanoke Island was an early success against the Confederacy, however, part of the plan after the capture of Roanoke Island was to also seize control the Southern rail link that carried supplies from the south to northern hubs of the Confederacy. Plans for this were aborted when it became clear that General Burnside and his troops were needed in General George B. McClellan's Peninsula campaign.
On February 7, 1862, 10,000 Union troops under General Burnside joined the naval forces of Admiral Goldborough's fleet of 17 shallow draft gun boats and assaulted Roanoke Island off the North Carolina coast. The naval fire power provided coverage for Burnside's landing troops. The overwhelming Union forces focused on that island provided the Union with a victory. In two days of fighting the Union controlled Roanoke Island.

Brigadier General Ambrose Burnside led a successful amphibious landing to capture Roanoke Island in early 1862. His primary goal, however, was to capture the Confederate city of New Bern on March 14, 1862. New Bern was a starting site for the export of cotton. Burnside captured significant quantities of cotton and supplies. His daring exploits led to his promotion to major general.
