Countee Cullen was a prominent African-American poet who was part of the Harlem Renaissance. While attending Dewitt Clinton High School in the Bronx, he excelled at school and developed his talents as a poet. While a student at New York University, he won poetry contests sponsored by the Poetry Society of America. He graduated college Phi Beta Kappa and entered Harvard, graduating in 1926 with a Masters in English. Following his graduation, he joined the creative community of Harlem during its creative renaissance.
