You're probably asking, how many men fought in the Tonkin Gulf sea battle (officially called the Tonkin Gulf Incident).
The first naval engagement, which was an actual sea fight, involved probably 300 men aboard the US destroyer USS Maddox, as well as possibly a dozen or less US Naval airmen flying F8 Crusaders which also attacked the North Viet Navy torpedo boats. The North Viet Navy P4 torpedo boats had maybe less than a dozen North Vietnamese Sailors aboard the 3 or 4 boats...so less than 50 men.
Altogether, probably less than 500 men fought in the 02 August 1964 sea engagement (1st Tonkin Gulf Incident).
The second incident, involved the two destroyers USS Turner Joy & USS Maddox. There quite possibly being no enemy present (just radar ghosts), only the two destroyer crews would have been directly involved...being roughly 600 men or so.
Some 697,000 active duty service members and activated National Guard and Reserve unit members served in the Persian Gulf theater of operations.http://www.defense.gov/news/fact_sheets/f950304_gwi_fact.html
The Gulf of Tonkin incident occurred in 1964 not 1965. Probably no choppers were lost during that confrontation. The engagement was primarily between US destroyers and NVN (North Vietnamese Navy) patrol boats; of which supposedly, one or more of the Northern boats were sunk by the US destroyers. During the Viet War, approximately 8,000 US helicopters were crashed or destroyed from all causes. Many were recovered and scrapped. Over 2,000 US fixed wing(jets/airplanes) aircraft were destroyed. Nearly all of the US POWs held in NORTH Vietnam were US Airmen.
According to the Almanac there was 71,254 Marines who served in the Persian Gulf War!
Approximately 900,000 US service people served in DS.

The United States claimed that North Vietnam fired at American ships in the Gulf of Tonkin. This led to the Gulf of Tonkin resolutions which gave President Johnson the power to do what ever he deemed necessary to protect America. Many people believe North Vietnam never fired at American ships and Johnson just made it up for an excuse to go to war.

In February, 1965, the Viet Cong attacked an American military base near Pleiku. Using the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, President Johnson sent in 3,500 Marines, the first official troops, to South Vietnam. By the end of the year, there were 200,000 US troops in Vietnam.

The Gulf of Tonkin is a body of water located off the coast of northern Vietnam and southern China. It is a northern arm of the South China Sea. The Gulf is defined in the west by the northern coastline of Vietnam, in the north by China's Guangxi province, and to the east by China's Leizhou Peninsula and Hainan Island. Hainan is about 100 miles from the mainland.
Many records were lost during and after the war, but most estimates put the number of Confederate soldiers that served during the war at between 750,000 and 1.25 million.
