In the aftermath of the American Revolution, Northern states started moving toward emancipation, and many Southern states restricted the importation of slaves. The American Revolution was fought from 1765 to 1783.
The American Revolution was fought for the rights of the American people, so they could have their own government, protection, their own property, and not be maltreated by Britain's salutary neglect of the colonies. The colonists were fighting for their freedom, and the British tried to keep them dependent on them. This difference of opinions was what started the war.
Many blacks did fight in the south but not as much as blacks in the north. Blacks in the south that fought were either free land owners and were fighting to keep their land, or they were slaves of owners who were drafted in the war and they fought alongside their owners.
They both fought to free themselves of tyranny. America fought to free itself from the rule of George III, while France fought to free itself from the rule of its monarchs and nobles. Although the American Revolution was not as violent as the French Revolution, they both made a big impact at cost many lives. One can also see the similarities through their connection with each other at this time. During the American Revolution, the French aided in the defeat of the British navy and land forces. This, in turn, cost them and put them in a deficit. This deficit added to the need for Revolution in France. Both Revolutions established a constitution with their own forms of government and citizen rights. The final stage of the French Revolution was the Directory. This was the establishment of Napoleon as France's new leader. After the American Revolution, President George Washington became President. After both Revolutions there was a strong and influential leader established.
Yes, there were black soldiers during the American Revolution. Many of them were slaves who chose to fight on the side of the British because they were promised freedom by the British in exchange for their loyalty to Great Britain. As a result of this promise, of the grand total of 15,000 African-American men who fought in the American Revolution, 10,000 of them fought for the British. The American military also recruited blacks; some free, some slaves. The 1st Rhode Island regiment is one example of this. This regiment was primarily composed of slaves and free blacks who were promised their freedom in exchange for their service to the American cause. Late in the War, the American ranks were dwindling and in serious need of reinforcements so Congress ordered that the military recruit men in whatever way they needed to. Free blacks were recruited first and in some cases slaves joined the ranks in place of their masters. Many slave-owners did not want to leave their homes so, if they could afford to do so, they would send a slave to fight in their place. There were multiple ways in which black men could and did fight in the American Revolution. See the Related Links below for more information on this subject. Also, on a side note, Crispus Attucks, a former slave living in Boston was on of the first men to die during the infamous Boston Massacre in 1770.
