In the American Civil War there were some 600,000 plus fatalities among the Union and Confederate military forces. However this does not reflect that many of these fatalities were not because of combat but rather by disease. Both the Union and the Confederate Armies suffered greatly from yellow fever, malaria, dysentery and a host of other maladies. Actual deaths from wounds sustained in combat would number probably in the 400,000 range and may even be less due to the horrible attrition brought on by disease, and in the Confederate army, malnutrition.

There have been over 630,000 U.S. casualties since the end of the American Civil War, including over 116,000 in WWI, 405,000 in WWII, 36,000 in the Korean War, 58,000 in the Vietnam War, and over 6,000 in Iraq and Afghanistan. As an aside, it can be noted that the total deaths of the US Civil War are almost equal to all the latter wars fought by the US. It can also be noted that, the US has never fought a war with another democracy.

How many soldiers died for the union in the civil war?

About 620,000 soldiers died in the U.S. civil war. The Union lost around 360,000 killed (110,000 in combat) and the Confederacy lost around 260,000 killed (93,000 in combat). About 360,00 Union soldiers and around 260,000 Confederate solders died in the American Civil War. A hole 5 percent of the states population was lost. Many were wounded. Back then the medican was so premature all they could do to save the wounded was to amputate. All they could amputate were limbs. Stomache wounds were fatal. More soldiers died from diseases than from battle wounds from the poor living conditions, and because many soldiers did not know how to live off the land. About 600,000 people died from the north and south in the American Civil War (1861 t0 1865). There are some published estimates that reach up to 650,000 US Civil War deaths.
