Private First Class Jacklyn Harold Lucas went AWOL from Pearl Harbor and stowed away on the USS Deuel (APA 160) which was bound for Iwo Jima. He turned himself in to the Troop Commander who assigned him to the HQ Company. On the day after the landing he earned his Medal of Honor as the youngest Marine to win the Medal in WWII. He had turned 17 one week earlier. He was discharged without the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal on disability.

Kennedy was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for his heroics in the rescue of the crew of PT 109, as well as the Purple Heart Medal for injuries sustained in the accident on the night of 1 August 1943. He did not however receive the congressional medal of honor.
