The Romantic and Impressionist styles were not very open-ended. The artist paints objects or people and expects the viewers to interpret them as they appear. With abstract art, however, the interpretation is very open. When you look at artists such as Mark Rothko or Kandinsky, there are a range of things their paintings could mean, because they don't deliberately depict an object or person.
