A wife did all the food storage - meats needed to be smoked or salted, vegetables pickled or dried so that the family would have food enough to last all winter. Fruit was dried or preserved with sugar. Milk was converted into butter and cheese to preserve. The wife cooked the meals. A women handmade all the clothes for the family. Shoes were made to order by cobblers, and most homesteading children were lucky to get one pair a year.
Mom also had to do all the washing, which was a three day process. Monday was usually wash day, when the clothes and linen were boiled with lye to get them clean. On Tuesday, the clothes were hung up to dry. On Wednesday, the wife ironed all the clothes with a SAD IRON which was a solid piece of iron that was heated on the stove.
