It is gravity that creates the force that causes an object to fall. We know that gravity is a function of mass, and the mass of the objects being considered will have an effect on how fast they fall. Additionally, the shape of the object will have something to do with how fast it falls. A flat piece of cardboard will not fall as fast as a glass ball of the same mass.

Gravity affects speed because it is a force and if it is what results in the netforce of a mass then that mass will accelerate and increase speed (or decrease if the mass is moving away from the pull of gravity). If it were possible the mass would continue to accelerate but since on earth there are things like air resistance, mass will hit a terminal velocity where gravity matches air resistance and the speed stays the same.
