The Republic of India is a secular democracy where religion is officially separate from governance. That being said in that is democracy political parties may drawn upon their electorate from religious Demographics and interests. In this way certain parties and politicians are influenced from religious lobbies and pander to them both in action and political rhetoric. The relationship is akin to Vatican relations with Italy or the religious right in the United States providing political funding and votes for candidates and parties.
