In 1785 King Charles III realized that most of European countries used flags which were predominantly white, including Spain. That led to many confusions particularly at sea. So he ordered to make a new one flag which can be seen clearly from great distances. The red and yellow colors can be seen very well at sea, so they chose that one, also to distinguished from others tribanded flags, the yellow central band was twice the width of the red bands. On the yellow band appeared the coat of arms of the king and above of it the Real Crown. This flag lasted until 1931, when Second Spanish Republic was proclaimed, the new regime changed the monarchist flag for a new one in which the second red band was turned into murray and the coat of arms was changed as well. After Spanish Civil War, the flag returned to be bicolor, but the arms was changed again by the dictatorial regime, claimed to be inspire in Catholic Monarchs coat of arms and adding the Pillars of Hercules and the motto 'una, grande y libre' (ONE, GREAT and FREE). This one lasted until 1978, and in 1981 Democratic Constitution changed the arms for the coat of arms of Spanish Kingdom including the House of Bourbon crest in the middle of it.

The first coats of arms were assumed by the knights themselves. That is, they came up with their own marks, but this often led to confusion when several people would show up with the same mark. So the king put someone in charge of keeping track of who was who and writing down which marks belonged to which people. That person was called the Herald, and the science of creating coats of arms and tracking their use was called heraldry. People who wanted to create a new coat of arms had to have it approved by the Herald and soon there were so many that the Herald had to ride from town to town to hear about new coats of arms and make decisions to resolve conflicts. These visitations led to the court of chivalry, and before long, the Herald himself would assign a coat of arms to a new knight or member of the noble class, and the court of chivalry would make decisions about changes and conflicts. There are even some records of cases when the king himself assigned a coat of arms to someone by royal decree.

If the family name is of British, Scottish, Welsh, or Irish ancestry, the College of Heralds is the place to seek help.Heralds have, down thru the centuries, been the people who design and authenticate, family coats of arms, and crests. They are the official arbiters of what, who, why, and when, as it applies to family heritage.Do a GOOGLE search and see what the College of Heralds can do to help you.Follow up question on previous response. What about a European (Polish,German,Swiss,etc.etc.)surname. Use the same resources??Be very cautious in researching a family crest - the majority of people at that time did not have such an emblem, and were farmers, peasants, etc. There area lot of scam companies offering crests, lineages etc for a price.Don't forget, just because you find an authentic crest for your Surname does not necessarily make your family eligible. You must find and authenticate a direct lineage to the proper family members to use a crest. There is no such thing as a family crest; crests are part of the overall heraldry held by an individual (usually a man). They refer to the crest worn on top of a knight's helmet during the late medieval period - not to the design on the shield.A crest can be many kinds of things like a swan, a deer's head and neck, a man's arm holding a sword, a ship, a standing dragon and so on. This crest was often used as a badge by the knight's retainers and servants, who were not permitted to have a coat of arms.Fraudsters have in modern times pretended to be able to identify "your family coat of arms" in return for payment; this idea is completely false because if you have been awarded a complete coat of arms (with motto, supporters, mantling and crest) you will already have a legal heraldic document proving it - nobody without that evidence can claim to have any heraldry. In England, Wales and Scotland it is a serious offence in law to pretend that you have title to any part of a coat of arms (including the crest) when you have no such right.
