Elizabeth H. "Liz" Shuler.She is an American labor activist and, since September 16, 2009, Secretary-Treasurer of the AFL-CIO. She is the first woman and (as of 2009) the youngest person to hold the position of Secretary-Treasurer. She is the highest-ranking woman in the labor federation's history. Her election also marks the first time that two of the three officer positions in the AFL-CIO were held by women.
Because so many men were needed to fight in WWII, there was a labor shortage in the US. This affected women, because women had to fill those labor roles.
In the later years of the 19th century, the Knights of Labor was the US's largest labor union. Women comprised about 10% of its membership.As an aside, women formed their own labor unions and protective societies in the 1870's.

The Knights of Labor showed how powerful a labor organization could be by literally shutting down the country's railway system when the union called for a strike. The Knights was the first labor organization to represent laborers, rather than just craftsmen. It also promoted a progressive membership which included women and African Americans. It was also the first labor organization that used politics effectively, including sharing in the formation of the Greenback Party.
