The steam engine allowed the development of steamboats and it improved transport of goods to be brought from one place to another ect.
ADDED: Not at first.
The steam-engine was developed quite rapidly from very crude beginnings driving mine-drainage pumps, into viable prime-movers for all sorts of factory machines. In turn this allowed industry the flexibility to build factories independent of rivers, their only previous power-source, and to produce goods at a far higher rate than water-power had allowed.
Its application to road, rail and sea transport came a bit later, once sufficient collective experience had been gained; then grew very rapidly to allow large quantities of goods to be moved long distances relatively economically.
the steam engine had a huge effect in the industrial revolution. they were used in mining and transporting goods aroung england. steam trains were used for public transport, this opened up a huge discovery for people who hadnt even left their own village. now they could explore their country. it was said that the british were as ignorent of their own country as they were the moon until the steam engine

steam, electricity, and water
Many machines came in to prominent use during the I/R, but perhaps the most important was the steam engine. Steam drove the factories, mills, and manufacturing of the revolution, beginning in England and quickly spreading to Europe and North America. Do not, however, confuse the steam engine with the internal combustion engine, which was used in automobiles.
The Agricultural Revolution
The most important invention during the Industrial Revolution is the steam engine. Also the telegraph was a really important tool which was invented during the Industrial Revolution.
