The steam engine allowed the development of steamboats and it improved transport of goods to be brought from one place to another ect.

ADDED: Not at first.

The steam-engine was developed quite rapidly from very crude beginnings driving mine-drainage pumps, into viable prime-movers for all sorts of factory machines. In turn this allowed industry the flexibility to build factories independent of rivers, their only previous power-source, and to produce goods at a far higher rate than water-power had allowed.

Its application to road, rail and sea transport came a bit later, once sufficient collective experience had been gained; then grew very rapidly to allow large quantities of goods to be moved long distances relatively economically.
