Casca tells Brutus and Cassius about the show at the Lupercal, where Mark Antony offered a crown to Caesar three times. Casca was almost certainly wrong about that. This whole episode was a piece of political theatre, designed to fool the masses into thinking that Caesar did not want the powers of a king when in fact he had already assumed the powers of supreme dictator for life. Caesar knew, and Shakespeare knew, that the masses will go for the superficial and showy and cannot be bothered to examine the more complicated reality that underlies it. Thus Caesar will refuse a crown, the superficial symbol of kingship (the masses go "yay!") but accept greater power than any king ever had (the masses go "huh?"). Casca doesn't get this; he thinks that this is a spontaneous gesture by Antony to which Caesar will spontaneously react. This does not sound like the kind of thing Antony or Caesar would do. They'd have it planned out. Casca knows about Caesar's ambition, and reads that into what he saw.
