William's army was better prepared, he showed good leadership and he had better tactics. It was bad timing for Harold and also Harold's 's army was weak.
He showed good leader ship. He rode at the front of his army, whereas Harold was at the back of his army. When his men thought he had been killed or injured, he lifted up his helmet so his men could see his face. Before the battle, he told his army that God was on their side and that they were doing the right thing. They spent the whole night, before the battle, in prayer. He fought beside his men as if he was one of them, not king!
it was a bad timing for Harold. Before The Battle of Hastings, Harold Godwineson had had to go to the battle of Stamford Bridge, where he had fought Harald Hardraada and won. The battle of Stamford Bridge up in the north, so because there was no means of transport they had to march on foot, up to the north. Then, when William appeared in the south, they had had to march back down again. Also lots of his men were killed and most of his men were farmers, so they had gone home to harvest. If Harold had waited, more men would have come and he might have won.
William assembled a great army of armoured knights, soldiers and archers. He also had a huge amount of ships to carry his army over the English Channel. William used the very clever trick of retreating down the hill to make the English follow and lose their ground. After that, the Norman army quickly doubled back on themselves and surrounded and killed the helpless English. As well as all this, William had a store of the finest weapons in France.
The duke of Normandy won the battle because he was more prepered and Harold had lost a lot of his strongest soldiers in the battle before and then had to travell a long way after which he was very tired. Also he was very luky eg. the wind blew the right way when he was on the ships and also he maneged to trick the English by pretending to give up so that they would come of the hill. And a lot more luck.....ha ha ha!
Battle of Hastings
Some of William the Conqueror's victories were; the Battle of Hastings (1066), the Battle of Val-ès-Dunes (1047), the Battle of Mortemer (1054 - not personally there) and the Battle of Varaville (1057).
The battle was fought between Normandy and England. The Norman ruler who engaged in the battle was William the Conqueror and the English king was King Harold II. King Harold II was killed and England lost this battle and Normandy took over rule in 1066, England begrudgingly accepted William as their king.
The Normans should have won the battle of Hastings because they had a better army and they were more prepared for war. Also, William the Conqurer had more reasons to become king then the other monarchs. In the end, it was they who won the battle.
Yes the Normans did win the Battle of Hastings because of Harold Godwinson's mistakes for example he lost most of his men because he fought in a battle against Hardrada just before he heard that the Normans had landed in Dover and he only had about a quarter of his men left. Does that answer the question??!!
