How did the potato blight in Ireland start?

The English, who had no use for the Irish, spread the potato blight germs around on the potato fields so that they could get rid of as many Irish as possible. It largely worked - millions of Irish either starved to death or immigrated to other nations, like Canada and the USA. (That's why my greatgreatgreatgreatgreat grandfather came to America)

When did the Irish potato famine start and end?

from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Famine_(Ireland) The Great Famine (Irish: An Gorta Mór lit: The Great Hunger[1] or An Drochshaol, lit: The Bad Life) was a period of starvation, disease and mass emigration between 1845 and 1852[2] during which the population of Ireland was reduced by 20 to 25 percent.[3] Approximately one million of the population died and a million more emigrated from Ireland's shores.[4] The proximate cause of famine was a potato disease commonly known as late blight.[5]In the 1840's

What caused an increase of Irish immigrants to the US?

The basic food crop of Ireland was potatoes. There was a "Potato Famine" from 1845 to 1852 caused by a blight that devastated the potato crops nationwide in Ireland. Over a million Irish starved to death, and a huge immigration to the USA by over a million Irish followed, looking for another place to start over, and work to earn money to eat, as simplistic as that sounds.

Why did the Irish Immigrants come to America?

In the times when immigration was heavy, America was a blossoming country, and was said to be the best place to live. It was thought that America had land and jobs to share and that is why America was a popular place to immigrate to. In the case of why the Irish specifically came, it was most probably the Potato Famine. The Potato Famine left thousands of Irish starving, and without any income. Raising the potatoes was the livelihood of most Irish and when the rot struck, they had no way to pay landlords or pay for food. They were forced to leave in hopes of a better life somewhere else, and since America seemed to be so rich in opportunities, most chose to go there.

Why did the Irish blame Britain for the famine?

Theres a few factors:Over reliance on one crop the potatoe and more so again only 1 variety of potatoe. That's why the potatoe blight spread so quickly.British rule meant that farmers etc had to pay large rents to british landlords, so the food they did have went straight to englandBritish rule during the famine and little british aid didnt help either A potato famine is when potatoes start to die off then eventually vanish and they don't grow. It is something to do with a disease in the soil that is killing the potatoes
