The impetus for the British Empire came from the Act of Union with Scotland and England, and the formation of The Kingdom of Great Britain. However, before this English and Scottish colonists had been settling in the New World (America) since the 1500's.

The New World offered many valuable resources, such as sugar, tobacco and cotton. The British Empire was built on it's navy; by controlling the oceans they controlled the trade, and thus vast wealth. This financial dominance lead to continued naval dominance, and concurrently the mass expansion of the empire during the 19th Century.

The British Empire was started for monetary and economic security. Various nations became colonies that help subsidize wealth investments for England. Securing rare and demanded commodities (spices, teas, and other raw goods for less and used in the economic trade with western markets in quality).

It's goal was to establish the same wealth that Spain once demanded via the resources from the America's especially silver was the primary boom from mines in Bolivia that saw an amazing wealth pool but in the end Spain collapsed in a Silver economic bubble value despite current silver prices it is a far cry of the high value once garnered several centuries ago.

Slowly many ties to the U.K. are slowly declining the Empire once established to securing England's Economy also came with the responsible requirement of defending the distance outposts that incurred expense in management or governance. Gradually as these colonies of the British Empire became upgraded or productive under western standards most also became independently capable to self-govern or operate independently. Therefore it enabled the Franchising (effect) new independent nations with set infrastructures in place pre-established. Example India still uses the same rail systems first built by British Engineers.
