The first colony was part of Sir Walter Raleigh's efforts to colonize Virginia beginning in 1584. But the colony on Roanoke Island disappeared during a war with Spain. By 1850, some of the settlers in Virginia moved to North Carolina. In 1663 and 1665, Charles II granted proprietary charters in the Carolinas, under a plan by Anthony Ashley Cooper. There were transient colonies in South Carolina and Florida during the late 1500s by both the Spanish and by French Huguenots.

As early as the 1650s settlers from Virginia had been moving into the area of Albemarle Sound (now part of North Carolina). The colony of "Carolina" was officially granted a charter by 1663 and again in 1665, but the administrative seat was in Charleston (now in South Carolina). It appears that from the beginning, there were governance issues, possibly due to the distance between the two locations. Sometime in 1689-90, the governor in Charleston appointed a Deputy Governor to oversee the northern portion of the colony. By 1712, the split became official and the Governor of each area was appointed separately. The particulars of the grievances that caused the split are a bit ambiguous. It is not known exactly how long the Indians have lived in what we know as the Carolinas but the first actual Charter claiming "Ownership" of the lands was made by Charles the Second of England in 1663. However there is evidence to indicate that Settlers had been living there since some time around 1650 and were generally believed to be a combination of outcasts and isolationists as well as some simple hearty and adventurous souls from the other colonies ... most notably the Virginia colony. North Carolina or initially the Carolina Territory got its name from Carolus which is the Latin word for Charles. It seems however that the territories were actually named after Charles the First and not Charles the Second himself. This charter was revised again in 1665 in order to extend the land grant and clarify points of question between the landholders. In 1729 many of the landholders sold their holdings and Carolina became formally known as a colony or a Royal Colony as it was known then.
