It allowed unarmored troops to fight tanks. Bazookas were principally antitank weapons that employed shall shaped charges to do localized damage to tank treads, and to pierce the thin armor of early tanks. They could be used against other targets, but the lack of a substantial high explosive charge rendered them of limited effect. Later hand-held rocket launchers are more versatile. Still, small rocket launchers in general tend to be more effective against vehicles. Rocket-propelled grenades and grenade launchers are more effective against troops and other soft targets.
