The United States acquired Florida from Spain. Spain ceded it to the U.S. by signing the Adams-Otis Treaty in 1819. Indians and escaped slave were using Florida as a base to stage raids on the US territory north of Florida. Spain did not have the resources it would need to stop the raids. so the US sent in an army which took possession of the Spanish fort in Florida and too control of the area. The US Army commander, Andrew Jackson, exceeded his authority and there was an international protest when he arrested the Spanish governor, but Spain was really in a position to do any more than protest and the treaty resulted. The treaty actually ceded some land all the way to West Coast and gave some justification to US later US claims against Mexico.
