They never had patriotism. They did believe in Pax Roma, but the population of Rome was made up from many different people and cultures. To have patriotism a unification of the country is needed and they really never had that.

How did Rome writers promote patriotism?

Which ones and when? Rome has a thousand year history, and what the writers of the early republic did was far different from the writers of the late empire. Virgil tried to inspire patriotism by linking the Reign of Augustus to venerable mythology. He created an epic poem which linked the resurgent Romans to the fallen Trojans, finally taking back the mantle of leadership in the mediterranean world from the Greeks. Four hundred years later, Boethius and Augustine of Hippo tried to create patriotism for their now Christian empire by writing philosophical treatises which linked the rule of Rome to the eventual world wide unity under Christ.

Was there an organized religion for the Romans?

The Romans themselves did not generate an organized religion, with perhaps the very loose exception of offering sacrifices for the good of the state and emperor. They were polytheists, which means that they believed in many gods. However, they didhave organized religions which were imported from their territories. The worship of Isis, Cybele and Mithra were three of them.
