In ancient times, the small city of Rome grew slowly but surely into a world power for many reasons. Its geographic location was one reason, as it was located centrally in the Mediterranean, astride important trade routes on land and sea, and in a very defensible site. Distinctly, the character of the Romans was another reason, as they were innovative, militant and proud, and also unusually persistent in making sacrifices for the sake of achieving greatness.

The Roman Empire rose to power through a combination of military conquest, political alliances, and effective governance. It started as a republic in 509 BCE, with the overthrow of the Etruscan monarchs, and gradually expanded its influence through wars and diplomacy. Julius Caesar's rise to power marked the transition from the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire, and his adoptive heir, Augustus, became the first emperor in 27 BCE.
