A description of the Miami tribe written in 1718 mentions women's dresses of deer hide (indicating that deer were hunted both for meat and skins) and a particular and possibly unique type of maize (corn) which was compared with that grown by the natives of Detroit; it was "white, of the same size as the other, the skin much finer, and the meal much whiter."

The Miamis also hunted buffalo, which would be the now extinct eastern woodland species: "when they saw a herd of buffalo they gathered in great numbers and set fire to the grass about the animals, leaving open a passage where they posted themselves with their bows and arrows; the buffalo, seeking to escape the fire, were compelled to pass the Indians, who killed large numbers of them. The women spun thread of buffalo hair, with which they made bags to carry the meat, toasted or sometimes dried in the sun."

It is likely that the Miami also grew beans and squash, hunted turkeys and small animals and fished in the lakes and streams.
