Potato Blight, one of the worst disease problems for the potato grower, can wipe out the plants almost overnight and it can infect the tubers causing them to rot in storage. In a sack it will travel from potato to potato ruining the lot. Potato Blight is caused by a fungus Phytophthora infestans. It spreads through the air and develops when the weather conditions are warm and humid. Being air borne the fungus spoors would have initially arrived and been spread by the wind but it is impossible to establish their precise origin. The Blight struck not only Ireland but also the Scottish Western Highlands and Islands as well as most of Western Europe in the mid-1840s. It might be useful to trace the timeline of its appearance in order to determine the direction of its spread, but this is to ignore complex circulatory wind systems that may have existed at the time. Potato was the staple food of most of the poor rural communities and the extent and speed of the spread of the blight led to famine throughout affected areas. The reluctance of a major section of the wealthy landowners and politicians to furnish charitable support on the grounds that it might encourage idleness and dependence amongst the victms further exacerbated the famine's effects.
