The Enabling Act (or more correctly 'Law for Alleviating the Distress of People and the Reich') allowed Hitler to establish his Dictatorship. A vote was put forward to the Reichstag and it passed 441 votes to 94. The Reichstag basically voted itself out of power and gave that power to Hitler. This all happened on the 23rd of March 1933.

Hitler was able to pass the Enabling Act on the 23rd of March 1933. He had been made Chancellor of Germany in January 1933.

The Reichstag Fire of February 1933 was blamed on the Communists and pushed President Hindenburg to pass the Decree for the Protection of People and State. This Emergency Decree allowed Hitler to arrest political opponents and he called an election for March.

In the March elections the Nazi party gained a two-thirds majority after taking up the Communists' seats and forming a coalition with other nationalist parties.

Using the two-thirds majority and threatening chants from Nazi thugs - 'we want the bill or fire and murder' - the Nazis were able to pass the Enabling Act and make Adolf Hitler the legal dictator of Germany.
