Chinese workers, also known as "The Celestials" were honored to place the last of the rails that would connect the coasts of the continent in 1869. Despite much castigation and discrimination in the California gold fields, the Chinese workers took the jobs no one else would, sometimes dangling from ropes to drill holes in the sides of mountains and placing explosives (nitroglycerin) that no one else would touch. Their names are lost to history.
