In the summer of 1863, the convergence of the Southern invaders and the Northern defenders at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, occurred mainly by accident. Given orders to avoid any serious engagement with the enemy, forward units of the Confederate force sought to enter the small town of Gettysburg simply in order to secure supplies. Stopped by a small force of Union troops (at the forward edge of their own army, still located some miles to the east and south), the Confederates nevertheless engaged -- and thus the general battle began.
In the civil war, both the Union and the Confederacy used muskets, bayonets (that pointy thing on the end of the gun), and cannons and other artillery. At close range, officers and some other infantrymen had sabers. The newest naval development was a type of ship called an Ironclad. These were ships whose hulls were covered in iron plating. They could withstand enormous amounts of firepower and could usually only be sunk by another Ironclad. The Union and Confederates both had one Ironclad. I don't know any specifics on any weapon types.
