Three of the tactics employed by the Allies to counter the affect of German U-Boats was to sail in large convoys with an escort of destroyers and corvettes; they also used zigzag patterns rather then simply sail in a straight line. This made it more difficult for the U-Boats to intercept them. All ships maintained radio silence and in the night they maintained blackout, i.e. no lights were shown by any convoy ships or their escorts.

Later, due to German submarine warfare, and anti-German propaganda, many Americans saw the war as democratic nations at war with despotic ones. This gave Americans a more favorable view of the western Allies. This allowed for the entry of the US into that war, especially the non restricted German submarine policy.
