Oh, dude, back in the pioneer days, if you broke your leg, you were pretty much screwed. They'd probably just give you a stick to bite on while they tried to set it, and then hope for the best. No fancy hospitals or painkillers for those folks. Like, can you imagine breaking a leg and having to just tough it out? Talk about a rough time.

Well, honey, back in the pioneer days, treating a broken leg was about as fun as a root canal. They'd probably set the bone as best they could, give you a swig of whiskey for the pain, and hope for the best. If you were lucky, you might get a wooden splint and a pat on the back. Thank goodness for modern medicine, am I right?

If it was a dislocation, they'd pull it back into place like they do today. If it was a break that remained contained, i.e. bone not sticking out of the skin, they would pull it back into place the best they could and then splint it. Tie to boards or rods on either side of the leg. If the bone popped out of the skin, they were pretty much goners. I supposed they'd set it but chances were too good that infection would take the limb or their life. If you look at how the average lifespan had close to doubled between 1900 and 2000 it's all because of anti-biotics.

Early settlers would have probably would have either tried to set the bone back into place or would have simply wrapped up the broken leg in a splint. A splint would have made the leg remain straight while the bone healed itself.

Pioneers would fix broken limbs by pulling the broken bones apart first to align them. They would then place them in alignment and set them with a splint.

Wood (a stick or sticks) can be used to make a splint.

How do you treat a broken leg on the Oregon trail?

If you were to get a broken leg on the Oregon Trail you would have someone lie you down on a hard surface. Then they would take the leg and pull it as hard as they could trying to put it back in place. Then once they thought that it was it the right place they would put a board next to your leg and tie a string around and around so that you could not move that leg. After that you would hope for the best.
