At the beginning of the Middle Ages, much of Western Europe was in a state of anarchy. This was a period called the Age of Migrations, and people of the time were far more interested in feeding themselves and staying alive than they were in freedom.
As the Middle Ages passed, the numbers of slaves declined, then more and more serfs were liberated. Part of the cause of this was events like the Black Death, which reduced the number of agricultural workers to the point that members of the nobility used various means to tempt serfs to move to their own estates from the manors of others. The means included offering a better deal, and this implied freedom. But another part of the cause was that at other times, members of the nobility wanted to reduce the numbers of serfs they had so they could use their land for purposes other than farming. And yet another part was the effect of peasant rebellions, which had some degree of success.
The nobility also had increases in freedom, gained at the expense of the kings, such as those granted in the Magna Carta.
Most of the people of the Middle Ages, both high and low, were not citizens. Most were serfs, who were not slaves, to be precise, but were legally bound to their land and could not move away. Some people were nobility, who were likely also to live in the countryside. Citizens were people who lived in cities and towns above agricultural size. They were not usually more than a small part of the population, but they were very important to the economy and the state.
Citizens included all sorts of people who did not have to life on the land. Most were freeborn. Many were merchants, craftsmen, innkeepers, brewers, millers, washerwomen, seamstresses, and so on. They also included physicians, lawyers, Accountants and people attached to the court. Unlike most people, they did not owe feudal duties to a landlord in terms of labor or crops.
In some places, such as Liverpool, the majority of citizens were runaways and former criminals. This happened because the King wanted to build a port on the site and needed to have a population. So he decreed that anyone who had been in the town for a certain length of time could not be tried for crimes committed elsewhere before moving there.
The early middle ages are referred to as the Dark Ages because after the fall of the Roman Empire civilization in western Europe came to a standstill and in many cases reverted to more primitive forms of living. Due to people's preoccupation with survival, arts and education were reserved only for a select few and much of the infrastructure that the Romans had set in place was neglected or stripped down with their materials being used for other purposes.
People were very poor except for the 10% noble class. They worried about food, disease, living conditions, and safety. Wars broke out and the men/boys were expected to fight and die. The Middle Ages was filled with superstitions so they feared things like the night air. Night was looked at as an a whole different time. With no lights to use for travel or anywhere it was very dangerous to go out. In many ways they weren’t much different than we are.
