Long distances and physical barriers separated China from Egypt, the Middle East, and India. The isolation contributed to the Chinese belief that China was the center of earth. These beliefs in turn led the ancient China to call their land Zhongguo (werdio's), or the Middle Kingdom.

The isolation that happened from around 1400 to 1840 has had a major impact on China and its people, economically and culturally.

It turned the people into a more humble and introspective type.

With strict central control over international trade and communication with the outside world, the Chinese people back then were very very conservative. And they were tamed to be a more obedient people.

Up until now the impact are still seen.
