Italy USA Italy (Veneto): Italian Venezia. Named after Veneti tribes who withdrew into the lagoon under the onslaught of barbarian invasions in the 5th century. In 697 it became a republic which lasted until 1797 when it came under Austrian domination. It joined Italy in 1866.
