In the Nam mail always went to the orderly room in base camps. From there it was sorted and went out to the field.
Tankers got their mail when another tank or M113 ACAV went and got it.

Actually top (slang for 1st Sgt) might take a 1/4 ton into town (basecamp) and pick it up then sort it out for the tanks to take out to the field. NO ONE wanted to drive a "wheeled vehicle" in the field. Tracks survived land mines, wheeled vehicles did not!
