Russia is very large and the Russian Army kept falling back which extended the supply lines and made them easy to attack by Cossacks operating in the rear. Troops were kept from the front to defend and escort the supplies and all of this time the Russians employed a scorched earth policy to further weaken Napoleon's force who had to forage far and wide for food and fodder.

Napoleon's invasion of Russia was foiled by Russian geography and weather. There was simply too much of each and he couldn't handle it all.
